The Lower Falls Covered Bridge is the least of the five covered bridges in Northfield, Vermont. Smallest, shortest, or least attractive? Do you think so? I also want to mention that ALL 5 Northfield covered bridges are red… To me, that beats Montgomery’s 6 NOT red covered bridges

But does least mean last? It was built in or around 1872, and it carries traffic over the Cox Brook stream, and in my book, it’s still doing its job after 140 years. Nothing can be “least” if it’s been working for that long.

It did get an update in the 1960s with four steel I beams supporting the floor. But when you approach, hang to the right until you make sure there are no other cars coming from the other way. This is still a one-lane, only covered bridge, so be watchful.
