Winter has arrived in New England, at least northern New England. The southern half has had a ton of rain, which is good for the trees and fall foliag,e but that is another season.

Vermont covered bridges

The covered bridges of Vermont are many, and I am close to photographing them all. Today’s covered bridge is the Upper Cox Brook covered bridge. There are several views that work for this bridge, but I was given a new “suggested view” from a friend (Carol) at the South Shore Camera club in Quincy, MA (I gave a presentation there in a prior year).

A Different View

Most times all we ever really see of a covered bridge is the opening from one side or the other. Maybe you’ll get an up or downstream shot, but that is about it.

I have gone down the hill from this bridge, catching the waterfalls below it, but just a little bit of the bridge above. Then Carol gave me this view to try. (I suggest knee-high boots) pass through the bridge, and on the left, there are tall grasses and the stream coming down to the bridge.

That is it. If it’s fall or winter, I highly recommend this view as the best view of the bridge. If there is a decent amount of water in the stream, you should get a nice reflection.

Anyway, the reasons I love this image were all the snow that was fresh and white, which contrasts nicely with the red covered bridge. The upper Cox Brook covered bridge is on of five covered bridges that I refer to as the Northfield 5. Four of the covered bridges reside in Northfield Falls, which is a part of Northfield, and the 5th is on the other side of Norwich University off 12A. It took me a while to find the 5th, which is the Moseley covered bridge.

As you can see from the image of the Moseley covered bridge, all of these Vermont covered bridges are painted red. Unlike many covered bridges in Vermont, which are left in a natural state, these all stand out in every season, but especially during the snowy winter season.

The red of a covered bridge against the white snow and the green pine trees just gives the feeling of a Vermont Christmas. In the first image of the Cox Brook covered bridge, the distant mountain can be seen in blue and white against the blue/gray sky.
