Motif #1 in Rockport, Massachusetts, is one of the most photographed and painted buildings in America—and for good reason. Perched at the end of Bradley Wharf, this unassuming red fishing shack has become a symbol of New England’s coastal charm and artistic legacy. Whether bathed in the golden light of sunrise or silhouetted against a snowy backdrop, Motif #1 offers timeless beauty year-round.
📍 Where Is Motif #1 Located?
Motif #1 sits proudly at the end of Bradley Wharf, just off Bearskin Neck in Rockport, MA. This area is the beating heart of town, surrounded by fishing boats, quaint shops, and an authentic working harbor.
🖌️ A Brief History of Rockport and Motif #1
Founded in the early 1600s, Rockport was long known for fishing and granite quarrying before becoming a haven for artists in the 1800s. Drawn by the rugged beauty of the coastline and the town’s quiet authenticity, painters and photographers made this place their muse.
Motif #1, originally built in the 1840s, was a humble fishing shack until its artistic fame took off in the early 20th century. Though destroyed in the Blizzard of ’78, it was quickly rebuilt to preserve its iconic status, right down to the same dimensions and weathered red hue.

☀️ My Favorite Rockport Memory
One warm May morning, I arrived in Rockport just before sunrise. The harbor was still, the only movement coming from a few lobstermen prepping their boats. The sky glowed faintly, hinting at the brightness to come.
As the sun broke the horizon, I wandered the silent streets of Bearskin Neck, camera in hand. To my surprise, one little bagel shop was already open. I stepped in for a coffee and bagel, then discovered they had a small harbor-facing deck out back.
There, I sat alone, sipping my coffee as the sunlight danced on the water and the muffled rumble of a lobster boat’s diesel engine signaled the start of a new day.

That quiet morning—before the tourists arrived and before the galleries opened—is etched into my memory as the essence of what makes Rockport, Massachusetts, so magical.
