Maine is the largest state in New England and you probably could fit RI, CT and most of Massachusetts in it's boundary. It has a portion of the White Mountains as well as Mount Katahdin which is either the start or the terminus of the Appalachian trail. Along with the longest ocean boundary in the Northeast and a great number of lighthouses. It's rustic nature is daunting to most folks and it rarely is explored thoroughly due to the difficulty in getting from place to place. You see the main road and Route all travel north to south with only a few that go east to west. So traversing Miane is a labor of love. You have to really want to cross it! Most people will go with the flow and travel the coastal Routes. The New England fall colors start way to the north at the Canadian border and much further than most will go to see them. In fact If I wasn't prepared for a trip to Alaska, I would do a trip that far north in Maine. Spare tire(s) and food and water and a willingness to hike back out go hand in hand with traveling that far north.
